3* A good story. However, seen before in other historic stories like this one.

it is slow moving and very male focused. However it does tell the story and explains a lot about Europe

Good movie not exceptional but well made. I was amazed at how much conniving was going on...life was dangerous...so many things went wrong. This is a factual history, with some fictional characters, telling the true story of a valiant fight for freedom from religious persecution, which still goes on in Ireland.

It made me glad I do not live in that country at that time. It is graphic for that reason it is realistic...crowds would gather to watch the public torture executions. People had property seized and were executed for what they believed even though they both worshiped the same G-d! The 20th century holocaust was nothing new...it was just more technological.

I especially noticed how the Tower of London used water boarding (semi drowning) as a form of torture back then but the USA government from Bush and Chaney forward told us that the water boarding of US prisoners was not torture. WOW!

Incredible mini-series. I'm still in disbelief at how cruel our human history is.

Gratuitous violence. It was not enough for them to show an execution near the beginning of the film but they made it far more savage. I won't describe it. I decided to look up the "characters" involved and found that some were fictional, so there was no reason to go as far as they did with the violence. I've been finding some of the BBC's series to be gory like this, and am now shying away from their recent series.

Ironically Guy Fawkes Day is a celebration. This movie depicts how he was tortured and murdered. Not any punches pulled with the torture aspect. Knowing this still goes on all over the world (political torture) and that mainstream politicians today joke about it makes one feel things haven’t changed much.

Real history is brutal. The English civil wars, and the religious persecutions claimed many. The law was harsh for simple crimes like poaching rabbits (death) when the poachers family was starving (no excuse). This mini series gives a graphic view of the punishment, torture, and death of people who stood against the crown. That the men who were protesting their treatment as practicing Catholics in England, went to the Spanish King for help, and saw the burning of Jews(Spanish Inquisition) is rich with irony. The story was believable , the actors did a good job, and it was well done with the costumes and scenes looking realistic. Guy Fawkes Day is now a version of Halloween in the UK making him famous beyond the event. Kit Harrington looks amazing as always.

Having watched "Mary Queen of Scots," this is almost a sequel that begins with Mary's son became King James 1 after Elizabeth I, Queen of England, died childless in 1603. James became the first monarch to rule both Scotland and England. This program is about the historic "The Gunpowder Plot" of 1605 to assassinate King James I by a group of provincial English Catholics led by Robert Catesby, portrayed by Kit Harington (Jon Snow of "King of Thrones.") The savage torture and execution methods of political/religious prisoners are eye-popping: Crushing/Pressing to death, beheading, flaying, racking, pulling finger nails, dunking (water boarding,) removal of the viscera organs and more...

Note: Holy wars between Church of England and Catholics then and today's NYT's article on: Buddhists have waged deadly attacks against minority Muslim populations, particularly in Sri Lanka and Myanmar. Some religious leaders and their followers are hell bent for power and domination...

I got this dvd because I like Kit Harrington, and medieval history . I stopped watching it. Kit pretty much just looked "brooding".. The history was not accurate. Showing an old woman naked - - no. Disappointing.

I will fight.
-You will lose.
Then I will sound a defeat so loud our enemies quake to hear it. They shall know the English Catholics suffer in silence no longer. What we have done, what we have dared shall put the fear of God in them.
===
You make me unafraid.
-I would rather make you terror-stricken so that you might live.
Knowing you, Anne, has made me a better man. It's made me the best man I could be.

My judgment day has come. You must live so that I may die a good death, knowing you're alive. I leave all my love with you.
===
Stand by me, Tom, and we will die together.
===
And what of your part?
-Mine?
You cannot be surprised when those you persecute turn on you. No more wine for me. I'll take vinegar.
===
Mr Garnet, it is expected you should recant.
-God forbid I had never any such meaning. I meant to die a true and perfect follower of Christ. "Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my soul."

What you intend is murder. There is no other name for it.
===
The path you tread is right well worn. It leads to a bitter and lonely end.
===
Bless me, Father, for I have sinned.
-What sins have you committed, my son?
I have plotted murder. The murder of the King.
-I will hear no more.
This is my confession. The King. His son, the Prince. His wife, the Queen. His Councillors and his parliament, I will blow them all to hell.
-Enough! I see pride in you. Do you repent?
No.
-Then there can be no absolution.
===
If Catesby and his friends are not stopped, Cecil will arrest innocent Catholics all over the land. He will tear them limb from limb. You alone have the power to save thousands of innocents from such a terrible and dreadful end.

I am not lost. I do God's work now. For the first time in my life my purpose is clear and my heart is full for it.

I have a son of my own, William, but I am too much about the King's business and so see little of my boy, to my great regret.
-You have it right, sir, you are too much about the King's business.
I am merely the servant of the state. I was apprenticed to this trade by my father. It is a trade that deals in darkness.
===
Guy Fawkes is a man with excellent knowledge of engineering and fortification.
-I do not know what to make of him. The man says nothing.
Well, that's his great strength.
===
The Parliament intends to make us capital enemies of the state. We are dogs to be beaten, boars to be hunted.
-We must pray that God pours his love and understanding into the hearts of those in Parliament who are against us. You sit there in comfort, secreted away from Cecil and his espials. You read your books, you drink your wine, you do not lack for meat, but I say that you have forgotten that outside these walls your flock suffers, Father Garnet.

You have a son, Robin. A finer lad I ever saw.
-The only woman I ever loved died because of him.
Robin. You cannot blame your son. Women know when they conceive, they carry both life and death. And childbirth is the most dangerous time. You're a father, Robin. You must love your son.
-I have no room for love. Hate I have room for, anger ...
===
This is England, sir. Our laws are nought to do with Spain.

===
Nothing to do with desperate men.
-I am a desperate man.
===
In our country, as Catholics, we are hunted, imprisoned, fined, banished, tortured and hanged.
-Kings are anointed of God.
James is a pretended king, and a tyrant.
-God alone disposes of Kings, good or bad.
