This biopic 's focus seems to be on Tolkien's formative years, especially his friendships and schooling. My husband and I enjoyed this movie very much. I even learned how to properly pronounce Tolkien.

.
I'm a LOTR fan and, while I enjoyed it, I doubt much of it is true.

A rare movie where your ears won't bleed, your heart won't feel horrible for seeing too much skin, and the violence is more for contemplation as opposed to being for gross demonstration. If this movie is truer than not I will say it spoke to me about how some beautiful things can come out of, from, and through tragedy.

Great story! Make sure to watch the Bonus section! The commentary was quite interesting and informative!

I enjoyed this romanticized depiction of Tolkien's formative years more than I thought I would. As with most biopics, I'm sure there are omissions and distortions, but the film as a whole was well-done and cohesive.

Wonderful movie. Great acting. The evolution of Tolkien's life events which lead him to write the LOTR stories was very interesting to me. How the author's life experiences shaped his writing; from his mother reading and acting stories with dragons to his fevered experiences of the trenches in WWI. Fascinating. The strong fellowship of his school comrades and that of his wife Edith. A gem of a story of the life that created Tolkiens love of languages and story telling. Of note: the Hobbit was published in September of 1937

While a good movie I disliked the imagery interspersed throughout the movie that was connected to works that didn't yet exist. Sometimes fan service works but in this case for me it didn't.

I am reminded of Dead Poets Society which I would highly recommend.

This well-acted biopic starring Nicholas Hoult as J.R.R. Tolkien and Lily Collins as his wife, Edith, is a worthwhile pick for Tolkien fans who want to better understand the author's interest in the themes of his novels, but the story itself is disjointed. It feels like three stories that deserved more focus lumped together and hurried through. I would have liked to have seen one movie focus on Tolkien’s homeschooling and his relationship with his mother, one movie focus on the fellowship he developed with his classmates at King Edward's School, and one movie focus on his courtship and marriage with Edith. Too bad Peter Jackson wasn’t in charge or he could have gotten the green light to turn this biopic into three separate movies.

I liked this movie more than I thought I was going to. It is well-acted and heart warming. I learned things about the author I didn't know. I would watch this again.
