Add a CommentA beautiful story about learning to let go of hateful words and be proud of your culture, enhanced by Hatem Aly's wonderful illustrations. This book is especially cool because one of the authors, Ibtihaj Muhammad, was the first Muslim American woman to wear hijab while competing in the Olympics.
What a beautiful book. The words and the pictures went directly to my heart.
Profoundly beautiful illustrations match this strong, empowering story of a young girl taking pride in her family traditions as her older sister wears her first hijab to school--one that is the color of blue between sea and sky. Out of love for her sister, she feels like she needs to defend her from the older bullies that mock her but learns from her sister to, instead, ignore other people's hate and ignorance and simply be proud of who you are.
Love, strength, family, faith, tradition. This book teaches not only about the hijab but these important lessons as well.
