He's known only as The Rook. He remembers waking up in a mass grave with rage dissolving his soul. He has no memory of his past. His family. His sins. His name. And when his escape from the grave leaves him collapsed, he is rescued by the most beautiful young woman he's ever laid eyes on. A woman who could maybe, just perhaps, heal the broken parts of him. If only he knew who he was. Lorelai Weatherstroke is comprised of three monumental days in her life. The day her cruel brother shattered her leg and left her crippled for life. The day she rescued the broken, dark angel beneath the ash tree at the age of sixteen. And the day he left her house, her care, and her heart, never to return again. But even twenty years later, she recognizes Ash, The Rook, instantly, as he comes surging back into her life to avenge her tormentors. But he has more enemies than the Devil waiting to hunt him down. Ash has already claimed Lorelai in his heart, but can he win back her love as he keeps her safe?

Thoroughly enjoyable historical romance. Well written, some of the dialogue is over the top but nontheless enjoyable. This was my first by this author & I'll try other books by the same.

Contemporary plot and characters in a pseudo-Victorian setting. This is not a historical romance. This is a romantic fantasy set in the writer's notion of Victorian England. Glad I didn't waste my money buying the book; too bad my library wasted money buying not one but two copies.

And why did the reviewer have to describe this as a bodice-ripper? I hate this derogatory term. It's been used for decades, usually by people who never read romances, to slam romances of all types.

I also really enjoyed this series. She is an excellent writer. I'm definitely a fan. She knows how to keep your attention through each chapter, you just can't put the book down. Highly recommend this series!

If you read a book by this author you will be hooked. Her descriptions are wonderful and her plots are far from ordinary. It would be best if you start at the beginning of this series with The Highwayman.

A rather "intense" story that depicts the darker side of the Victorian Age while exploring what it takes to let go of the trauma of the past as an individual and in relationships. Learning to forgive and trust oneself and others is wonderful. A cathartic reading experience for me!
