Saddened by her classmates' and teacher's mispronunciations of her name, a girl is empowered by her discovery that names are like songs when she and her mom celebrate the musicality of African, Asian, Black-American, Latinx, and Middle Eastern names.
Frustrated by a day full of teachers and classmates mispronouncing her beautiful name, a little girl tells her mother she never wants to come back to school. In response, the girl's mother teaches her about the musicality of African, Asian, Black-American, Latinx, and Middle Eastern names on their lyrical walk home through the city. Empowered by this newfound understanding, the young girl is ready to return the next day to share her knowledge with her class. Your Name is a Song is a celebration to remind all of us about the beauty, history, and magic behind names.

While certainly a tough book to read aloud, Your Name is a Song gets its point across precisely because of that difficulty. As it goes through names you'll encounter in your life that come from so many places and cultures, it challenges you to test them and learn to sing them just like the little girl who is struggling to teach her name to others. Full of color and inclusion, this story is a real standout work of social, educational fiction.

A sweet tale about how your name is unique and how names can be sung because they have power in them. They have zing!

When a little girl is sad that no one in her class can pronounce her name, her mother teaches her that her name is a song. The mother shows her that the names from Asia, Africa, Latinx, and African-American cultures are beautiful. When the girl goes back to school the next day, she teaches her entire class that each one of their names is a song.

This is an incredibly beautiful book about the importance of names and learning to pronounce them with respect for the person and their culture.

A wonderful way to teach kids how to pronounce names from different parts of the world.
