Add a CommentIn this young adult graphic novel origin story, Anderson makes Diana the only youth on Themyscira to have to deal with the challenges of growing up. From her body's changes, to her search for her identity and passion, this kindhearted, driven young woman, has more important things to learn than the techniques of a heroine. It's only once she ends up in New York, with Babchiu Henke and Raissa, that she begins to find her calling...to help and defend immigrants, people with low income, and especially children. These battles take a different type of action though, so she brings sandwiches to the park, and eventually becomes an American herself in order to continue on this path. As Anderson makes clear, there is more than one path one can take to fight for justice. Both she and Del Duca portray Diana and those around her as normal people, with normal problems. The art and text does not always give the emotional context enough weight, but as a whole they sufficiently summarize the issue of race, class, and justice in America, and the types of attitudes that are needed to improve things.
Wonder Woman's updated origin story follows Diana as she finds her way through a world with mortals and injustice. The combination of Del Duca's art with author Laurie Halse Anderson will dazzle both new and longtime fans.
