In the sleepy town of Brokenwood, New Zealand, the affable residents may seem harmless, but killers, blackmailers, and thieves lurk in every picturesque corner. To quell the community's alarming murder rate, Detective Mike Shepherd uses an unconventional style that contrasts with the methodical approach of his partner, Detective Kristin Sims, and the eager assistance of DC Sam Breen.

I've always enjoyed this series enough to look forward to the next season. Last season was just "eh..". But THIS SEASON? They really upped their game, don't know if they got new writers, but whatever, THIS WAS AN EXCELLENT YEAR! (only 4 episodes)

I found this series to be pretty enjoyable. I realize it is more in the realm of Death in Paradise where the detectives are as much of the plot as the investigation. Unlike some of the other BBC or ITV series which have more of the gritty detective investigations (Shetland and Vera being my current favorites), the four episodes in Series 6 each have an unusual homicide and it takes the talents of Cristina Ionda as Dr. Gina Kadinsky, medical examiner. Neill Rea as Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Shepherd moved to Brokenwood in Series 1 and brings with him an enjoyment of country music and of this part of New Zealand. I like that the cast of detectives and medical examiner are consistent each season as well as some of the local people who add their flair. This may be more similar to Midsomer Murders with so many crimes taking place in country settings and the use of familiar cast members who share a little more each season of their personal lives. In this case, I believe this is the first season when one of Mike Shepherd's former wives makes an appearance.

I agree with the previous review.
I loved this series when it started, (interesting characters, setting and stories) but now it has turned into nothing but weird, trashy garbage.
It had such potential, but falls short in the long run.

I had watched the prior 5 seasons and had hopes for season 6. But I couldn't finish it. The series started off well in seasons 1 and 2, but I think it's been sliding downhill from season to season, and this is a new low point. Writers for season 6 seem to think that more sleaze and an abundance of deplorable and/or weird characters are the formula for success. The emphasis on those two elements has grown year by year. Repeated blasphemy from multiple characters kicked in my gag reflex (such language is unnecessary and irritating). The balance has tilted too far the wrong way for my taste. New Zealand is beautiful and we had a great vacation there (years ago), but this show doesn't make me want to go back. If there is a season 7, I won't be watching it.
