A great novel about a man who, in the face of the world's cruelty, refuses to stop loving ... An American living in Brazil writes his memoirs, storing the pages in his antproof case. The pages tell of his exploits in World War II, his life as an investment banker and millionaire, as a thief, murderer and protector of the innocent ... a man who was never not in love.

"You're an investment banker. That means you don't know how to do a goddamned thing but skim the top off the money that real people make."
Mark Helprin's seen a surge in popularity thanks to the truly terrible looking film adaptation of his novel, "Winter's Tale." While you're waiting for that one, check out this eccentric, colorful and virtuosic "memoir" by a very likely (and likable) unreliable narrator. His picaresque life includes stints as a polite (shot down twice), investment banker, thief and quixotic anti-coffee advocate. There are touches of Marquez's spirited storytelling and Pynchon's absurd humor, but Helprin has a style and wit all his own. Bonus for being perhaps the only novel with "antproof" in the title.
