"She stood at a crossroads, half-aware that her choice would send her down a path from which there could be no turning back. But instead of two choices, she saw only one-because it was all she really wanted to see ... Current day, Oxford, England. Young American scholar Kendra Van Zant, eager to pursue her vision of a perfect life, interviews Isabel McFarland just when the elderly woman is ready to give up secrets about the war that she has kept for decades ... beginning with who she really is. What Kendra receives from Isabel is both a gift and a burden--one that will test her convictions and her heart. 1940s, England. As Hitler wages an unprecedented war against London's civilian population, one million children are evacuated to foster homes in the rural countryside. But even as fifteen-year-old Emmy Downtree and her much younger sister Julia find refuge in a charming Cotswold cottage, Emmy's burning ambition to return to the city and apprentice with a fashion designer pits her against Julia's profound need for her sister's presence. Acting at cross purposes just as the Luftwaffe rains down its terrible destruction, the sisters are cruelly separated, and their lives are transformed ..."--

At first I really liked this story and found it very interesting to get into. However, it became repetitive and the author got caught up in a lot of details that stretched the story too far, especially all of the writings in Julia’s journal.
I really like Susan Meisner’s books though, so will keep reading what she writes. This is just not as good as some of her others.

I really enjoy reading historical fiction so I picked up this book and what a wonderful story it is! It is a story of reinventing oneself after tragedy. Set during WWII two sisters become separated and we, the readers, are taken on an emotional journey through their stories and how they coped. Hope and perseverance in a tumultuous time of unrest and sadness are some of the themes explored in this novel and the way it is structured is engaging. I quickly became engrossed in the story.

If you enjoy this author, then you will really enjoy her novel, A Fall of Marigolds.

A young woman has a dream to become a bridal gown designer. But she is oblivious to the fact that Britain is in the midst of WWII and she is determined to make her dream a reality. The story leads the reader through many twists and turns on this young woman's journey. An engaging read.

A nice story written in a gentle undemanding style. A bit slow in spots but it always picks up again quickly. A good choice if you are looking for an enjoyable story without a lot of sex and violence.

Family secrets; choices and their consequences; as well as forgiveness and healing are some of the many themes explored in SECRETS OF A CHARMED LIFE. It is the touching tale of two sisters separated during the London Blitz of WWII. Effectively told for the most part by author Susan Meissner, for me the story lost some of its momentum in Part III which was presented as a series of journal entries, although there were still enough plot twists and suspense to keep me happily engaged to the end.
