This story of a brother and sister takes place before, during and after WW II in Denmark. It is about the bond between the brother and sister despite all. Very good.

I recommend reading this novel at the height of summer, because you get cold just reading it. Early on the narrator's alcoholic grandfather commits suicide; later the Nazis occupy Norway; the sister and brother are separated; the parents are unable to love their children. Good, depressing read.
