Opinion

From Library Staff

Distortions in space, time, and between fiction and reality. Danielewski's dorm room favorite remains a heady brew.

Like The Terror, House Of Leaves understands that isolation isn't just a matter of space. To simplify greatly it's a novel about a family who notice that their house has an inexplicable extra room, one that apparently stretches into the infinite and contains nothing except what those who venture ... A (somewhat) multimedia, nonlinear experience that deserves a second read! While it is a horror novel, there's a lot more going on under the surface, which quickly becomes clear as the layers of the story are peeled back. Really unique in its storytelling and format.

After several failed attempts to get into this book, I was finally able to enjoy sorting through the footnotes and unraveling the passages. It was well worth the efforts, and I now consider House of Leaves to be among my favorite books. It is weird and uncomfortable in the best ways and has made me rethink how I interact with books as a medium.

I wanted so badly to read this book because I have seen so many reviews saying it is one the the scariest novels out there. Unfortunately the format of this book does not flow well at all for me. It is a very different format and I do appreciate it for being unique. I wish that I could force myself to make it through it but I just can't.

One of the craziest reads ever. Beyond the contents of the story, the layout of the text is trippy, creative and impressive. The layers upon layers in this book is just wild.

Either you will love this book or you will hate it. I tried reading this several times but it never hooked me. Wound up just skimming through and reading bits and pieces.

By far, this is the strangest book I have ever read. I can't even place it in a particular genre. It pulls from so many. More in line with H.P. Lovecraft or E.A. Poe than modern story tellers, it often leaves things to the reader's imagination. This book is not an easy read. A narrative of a narrative of a series of documented events, containing footnotes, and footnotes of footnotes, often by one author, but sometimes by more than one, sometimes coherent, but mostly rambling in long run on sentences, separated by comma after comma, not unlike this sentence, often going for paragraphs, sometimes for entire pages at a time, some of it written upside down, sometimes backwards, some in code. I needed a dictionary in more than a couple of spots too. All said, I didn't really put this book down for 3 days. It sucked me in.

I don't think I've ever been so completely enveloped by a book.

Perfect postmodern, self-obsessed (masturbatory??) english/art theory book. If you love reading theory or you love reading something that consistently challenges your ideas of narrative, your ideas of how the reader and story teller engage and exchange, and your ideas of what the reader is entitled to then this is the book for you! If you only like horror and don't like a book that makes you work for it, then this is not for you!

Unique book, it's not going to be for everyone but I really enjoyed it. While I was recommended this book for the horror angle there is much more to this book than that.

I'm still not entirely sure if I liked this book or not. I am sure it was an experience, and I'm glad I read it. I would recommend it to a reader looking for something new… And scary.
