I'm pretty sure I haven't read any other book by the author, but as an introduction to his imagination this title did a good job.
If his other titles are of the same level of skill then I'd be happy to have a few more ready to read.
I'd describe the story as real science fiction, like the classics, which at their best gave you a sense of wonder and excitement at the possibilities out in the wild dark yonder.
I'm sure there are faults but I was sufficently engrossed not to notice, and liked that the characters were individual and unique, and human, with flaws, which contributed to the difficulties they had to surmount.
I loathe spoilers so I'll refrain from describing the plot, except to say it was satisfying to the end, and I'd recommend the author to any fan of the genre.
I'm going to seek out more of the author's works, since this novel has whetted my interest.

You would think that a society with faster than light travel would be a little smarter than to constantly keep touching the hot stove. Not our fearless travelers looking for the first "real" contact with a race that keeps trying to tell our heroes to back off. Genetic trimming in space and the next book will likely show us how mean they can get.

Chindi --- by Jack mcDevitt ---
There’s more than a whiff oif Robert Heinlein about this book. Just the boys and girls (well, not literally) of the Contact Society on a good jolly romp across Space in persuit of Aliens. We go looking for aliens, but it seems to be our own face looking back at us. The thing us, look as much as we may, we n ever actually find these aliens. Well, not really. McDevitt has certainly put together a super novel. An adventure story, really, with a ton of suspense. This is Science Fiction in the best tradition of the old masters of the craft. This is the stuff of which a good flic could be made. A fantastic book.
