In this adaptation of a Czech legend about an infertile couple, a husband presents a tree stump that physically resembles a baby to console his wife. When she treats it like a real baby, it comes to life and acquires a monstrous appetite.

I had high hopes for this one, based on a Czech folktale about a couple who could not conceive. To console his wife, the husband carves the likeness of a baby out of a tree root and her happiness is so profound that the wooden child, little Otik, comes to life. And then the trouble starts. The movie is made by Svankmajer, who has made many stop-motion animation movies, so I expected some amazing animations of young Otik, but was disappointed - he just flailed his little roots around in a very primitive way. The characters and story were good but everything progressed way too slowly.
