Set during the Battle of the Atlantic during World War II, the film tells the story of the cat and mouse hunt between the USS Haynes, a destroyer escort, and a German U-Boat. Captain Murrell, a former Merchant Mariner, saw his wife killed when his freighter was torpedoed by the Germans. Von Stolberg, the veteran U-Boat commander, sees no honor in the German aims of the war. Both of these highly experienced men must now try to outthink and outmaneuver each other, knowing that any mistake can bring instant defeat and death.

Damn I love Submarine movies ~420

Amazing cinematography both above and below the waves couples with explosive Oscar-winning special effects and a script both sharp and literate to produce a film that abandons the usual “guts’n glory” flag-waving in favour of darker, psychological insights. Although the opposing commanders have become inured to the dogs of war they are not without their individual scars for both men have suffered personal tragedies because of it and both have begun questioning the wisdom of armed conflict. The American sees warfare as something humans carry within themselves, the German laments the loss of honour among warriors, yet both have a mission to carry out despite their grudging respect for one another. Notable for its sympathetic portrayal of the enemy (no bloodthirsty Huns here), the intriguing plot was later recycled for an episode of "Star Trek" in which Captain Kirk squares off against an elusive Romulan commander.

Quite entertaining. The ending was unexpected.

A fairly okay Uboat vs US destroyer movie without a lot of chest pounding and mawkish lessons to be learned for the watchers.

American ship captained by Robert Mitchum and U-Boat captained by Curt Jurgens play a cat and mouse game where either one can destroy the other if they get in the correct position and get off accurate shots. The last 45 minutes or so are incredibly intense. Doug McClure (uncredited) plays an incredibly bad bridge player prior to the action. This film won an Oscar for special effects for the sea great battle between the two ships. This was considered to be one of the top ten films (USA?) of the year.

This is a classic movie. Sure it's about as flawed as anything can be- the U-boat interior is not the least bit realistic, the 50-year-old crew is laughable when the real guys were 18 or 19, and so on, but taken in context, for its time, it's a great movie. Robert Mitchum and Curt Juergens are outstanding and their 'duel' is pretty entertaining.
