VERY GOOD 1937 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer adventure film, based on the 1897 novel of the same name by Rudyard Kipling. It's a coming-of-age classic with exciting action sequences.
Harvey Cheyne (played by Freddie Bartholomew) is an interesting youth who has a falling out at his private boarding school and thenmtaken by his father on a business trip to Europe on a steamship.
Harvey does fall overboard midway and subsequently rescued by a Portuguese-American fisherman, Manuel Fidello (Spencer Tracy), and taken aboard the fishing schooner. Tracy does an excellent and amusing job as the Manuel character and pretty much leads the story.

Although definitely Hollywood schmaltz at times, this is actually one of the most character-driven adventures out there. Both Freddie Bartholomew and, especially, Spencer Tracy are right on target, with a strong supporting cast. One of my favorites for the family adventure genre.

A classic, thoroughly enjoyable film from start to finish, "Captains Courageous" is Victor Fleming's (Gone With the Wind, The Wizard of Oz) excellent adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's adventure novel. It stars Freddie Bartholomew as a rich little brat that gets ironed out by a salty old fisherman played by Spencer Tracy. It would be a great film for parents looking to introduce their kids to the classics, and could also be useful if you happen to have a little brat on your hands.

One of Victor Flemings greatest films of all time. The only problem that I have begun to notice after seeing this movie several times is with the accent of Spencer Tracy and that at times,Freddie Bartholomew, spoke his native English since he did come from England, but it's a minor problem. Both those actors knew how to perform. Freddie Bartholomew should be in a top ten list for being one of the greatest child actors of all time, I think he is.

Forced pathos and a glib sentimentality abound in this watery tale of a spoiled rich kid from New York who becomes an insufferably contrite wuss after he accidentally falls off a luxury liner and is rescued by a gruff old mariner. Miles from land and with no hope of returning home until the cod season is over several weeks hence, little Harvey Cheyne (Freddie Bartholomew, not even trying to attempt an American accent) finds himself adopted by Captain Troop and his salty crew of clichéd sea dogs including Manuel Fidello the Portuguese fisherman who pulled him out of the sea (Spencer Tracy sporting a ridiculous accent that makes him sound more like a missing Marx Brother). Under Manuel’s fatherly guidance and the stern yet harmless camaraderie of his new shipmates Harvey undergoes a sea change (bwahahaha!!) in which brattiness is replaced by a sense of conscience and a predictable tragedy leads to a greater appreciation of all things pure and spiritual. Despite an impressive cast of Hollywood A-listers who bravely deliver their hackneyed lines with the utmost sincerity everyone ends up going down with the ship anyway.

"Captains Courageous" is a whale of an adventure. The story was originally a novel by Rudyard Kipling. Director Victor Fleming, best known for his work on "The Wizard of Oz" and "Gone With The Wind", made an epic movie. He is helped out enormously by an Academy Award performance by Spencer Tracy. The rest of the cast should have earned awards as well. Special mention should go to Freddie Bartholomew who plays a boy lost at sea from a shipwreck. Mickey Rooney plays a great seaman at a young age. Not to be forgotten is the great cinematography by Harold Rossom. He brings out the beauty and the dangers of the sea. Visually the movie is stunning. You really feel like your on the fishing boat at the mercy of the sea. Although the movie was released in 1937, it still brings you out to a wonderful sea adventure 77 years after the release date. I really hope you watch the movie and write your reaction to it here on the KCLS web site. I will be watching for your thoughts on the movie.

A great family film!! Spencer Tracy and Freddie Bartholomew are terrific together. We all need to be trained at one time or another, and here Spencer Tracy teaches Freddie to be both a man and a seaman. I wanted to see Captains Courageous go on to be a series it was so good.

Great cast. Spencer Tracy was really endearing, but the broken English was awful, and a little irritating. Lionel Barrymore is a favorite of mine; John Carradine seems to pop up in so many old films; Charley Grapewin of "The Grapes of Wrath", and Mickey Rooney... The kid, Harvey, was (obviously) unlikeable as an annoying spoiled brat, (I cheered when Barrymore belted him), but I still disliked him at film's end. A fun adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's story from the terrific Victor Fleming, though, regardless.

One of the best films I have seen in this year. It was entertaining and interesting. Great performances a must see for all. Truly a really great movie worth the long library wait or the price to rent from a Red Box. Well worth the price of admission to any theater. A++ movie!!!!
