Add a SummaryThe dysfunctional Moody family live in the same house but have separate lives. John the father spends most of his time at work. Arlyn raises their son, has an affair, gets pregnant, then dies from cancer. Sam, a smart but strange child grows to be a drug addict. Blanca, the daughter is raised as John's child, and loves her brother. John remarries, Cynthia, the next door neighbor. He started his affair with her while his wife was dying. After Arlyn dies, she haunts John. She appears to him while leaving soot and breaking dishes. Into this house comes Meredith, who tries to help Sam, but eventually leaves when she marries. This ends with John dead, Sam dead, but with a son, and Blanca knocking on the door of Will's home to tell him about his inheritance from his grandfather. You are left to decide if this is a new start for this family.

Add a CommentI like Alice Hoffman but this isn't her best book. Its a sad story about the dysfunctional Moody family. Father is absent, mother dies, son is drug addict, and daughter loves brother. You feel sorry for this family and relieved when the book ends. You are left to guess if things are better for Blanca the daughter.
The story didn't work for me at all and didn't seem believable. I couldn't be bothered to finish it and returned it before half way through.
Such a sad story! Deals with a fractured family and the ripples from that. Hoffman's characters are simple yet profound, and she uses language to feel their angst.
An okay read in the beginning, although the author moved very quickly through the years. She uses some rather worn out ghost and haunting images and the characters are pretty stereotypical - uncaring father, drug addicted/detached son, etc. In the lat 25 pages of the book, the author tries to hard to tie up all the lose ends and it gets tedious to read. I recommend it when there's no much else to read on the Large Print shelf!
