The superlative Jane Eyre. Sure, it cuts out a bunch of stuff. But it's packed full of star power--big names like Orson Welles, Joan Fontaine, Elizabeth Taylor, and Margaret O'Brien, plus less well-known but excellent actors like Peggy Ann Garner, who later was the lead in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn--and the story hangs together just fine without St. John Rivers in the way. It's romantic and full of sweeping music and generally a fine way to spend an evening.

The worst Jane Eyre ever. Should have been titled Orson Welles, in love with himself.

GOOD 1943 film adaptation of Charlotte Bronte novel Jane Eyre (which I have never read). It IS a gothic romance and rather dark in its flavor, but the film production is high quality.
I did enjoy the Bernard Herrmann music. And there is a fun short bit of Elizabeth Taylor at age 11 in a child role.

There are a quite few of versions of it. This is the earliest one and it is still the best.

One of the best takes on Jane Eyre ever put on screen

+ Orson Welles is convincing as an older, manipulative romantic interest
+ Joan Fontaine plays Jane Eyre with the perfect combination of desperation, hope and strength
+ The cinematography and music contribute to the spooky atmosphere of the story

Overall stays faithful to the novel, though it downplays the horrific abuse Jane suffered as a child and skips the marriage proposal she receives after she left Rochester. I also wish they hadn't skipped as much of the story about Jane's reconciliation with her family as they did. As a young reader, that aspect rounded out Jane as a character for me. However, the other strengths of the film far outweigh this omission. Highly recommended for fans of the classic Bronte novel

This is a wonderful adaption of the novel! As a matter of fact, this film is better than the novel. The film editors deleted the unnecessary elements from the novel; thus, strengthening the story. Also, Orson Welles does an excellent job portraying Rochester, and the fact Welles plays a stronger Rochester than the novel describes also adds to the beauty of the film. Then Joan Fontaine does a lovely job playing Jane--making the character even more endearing to the audience. This is a must watch for all who loved the novel!

Of all the Jane Eyre movie made for television and the movie theaters, I find this original "Jane Eyre" to be the best of all of them. Orson Wells and Joan Fontaine are simple magnificent in their roles. This is Orson Wells in his prime and the same with Joan Fontaine. I notice that "Jane Eyre" has only one star. The comments here have four and five star ratings among them. Please don't be fooled by what must be someone's practical joke. This is a Five Star Movie. Please read the comments from thoughtful patrons of KCLS. I especially liked the comments from "Monolith" of December 17, 2012 and "Voisjoe1" of April 28,l 2012. Both of these patrons watch many movies and write reviews. If I have persuaded you to watch "Jane Eyre", then please leave your comments on the film. Then we will know for sure whether it is a one star movie or a five star movie!.

This movie was originally going to receive a 3/5 Stars, but was downed to a 2/5 Stars for the most inaccuracy I have seen in a book adaptation. I wanted to watch this one, because I saw the other 3 (or 2 at the time), and might as well seen them all. The second reason why,was because Orson Welles was starring in it and I loved his work in Citizen Kane. (Rosebud) :p Still, I did enjoy him as Mr. Rochester, but again the inaccuracy struck this movie to the grade where it now stands. Jane Eyre is easily 2 hours long(When prominent details are placed)-not 1 hour and 30 minutes.

A looming, gothic adaptation from future Disney masterpiece director Robert Stevenson. Gorgeously photographed with a foreboding score from composer Bernard Herrmann (Citizen Kane, North By Northwest, Psycho, etc.). Orson Welles was the quintessential showman -- he dominates as the dark Rochester. Joan Fontaine was delightful as the obstinate, tormented, delicate heroine. An eleven year old Elizabeth Taylor, and Peggy Ann Garner (of one of my all time favorite films, Elia Kazan's "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn") complement this wonderful classic. Beautiful film. FIVE STARS.

Somehow I have never seen this film. It reminded me of Rebecca. Both starred brooding men with troubled but hidden pasts, living in large gothic mansions. Lots of dark shadows and lots of mystery. Orson Welles and Joan Fontaine are excellent in the lead roles.

Jane Eyre: "Are you going to be married, sir?" Edward Rochester: "Sometime -- why not? ...Well, I suppose you think no one will have me -- well you're wrong. You don't know these young ladies of fashion; they may not admire my person, but I assure you they... dote on my purse..."
