A different sound from Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus, but still really great. I can see why the review (from Rolling Stone, I think?) said it sounded like the first Grinderman album - they definitely share a grittier, more scandalous tone.

One warning I'd like to give. There's a clever little hook in the song "We Call Upon the Author", right after the line that goes something like "nothing a pair of scissors can't fix", and it might sound as though your CD player is imploding. You might not want to drink any beverages while listening to it the first time!

Did not particularly like the album on first listen but after a long hiatus and re-listen it grew to be one of my favorite Nick Cave albums. Love the lyric writing on "We Call Upon the Author to Explain", "More News From Nowhere", and the title track "Dig, Lazarus, Dig". All tracks that display a more lighthearted and humorous side of Cave's writing. "Today's Lesson", "Albert Goes West", and "Midnight Man" are more aggressive and darker songs both musically and lyrically that harken back to the "Old Testament" version of Cave. And the songs "Hold on to Yourself" and "Jesus of the Moon" have a slower, more-melodic pacing.
