A strong addition to the series, Butcher raises the stakes by reintroducing an old and dangerous enemy and a desperate war fought on two continents. Fans of the series will enjoy the look at the foreign lands of Canea, and a deeper understanding of both the Canim and Icemen cultures. Certainly, the explosive ending will leave you wanting more as the battle for all of Alera has only just begun!

An excellent addition to the series. Fast paced, full of action, and it is great to see Tavi's character evolve.

Isana: And you're sending me? Why?
Gaius: ... Because Doroga trusts you, and he most definitely does not trust me.
Isana: You did say he was astute. (P. 109)

"Feh. Aquitane thinks me his enemy. The fool. If I truly hated him, I'd GIVE him the Crown." (P. 111)

"Slavery must end, sir," Durias said. His tone was quiet and respectful, but the words were made of granite and steel. "From there, we are willing to abide as any other freeman. But not until all Alerans are free."
"That isn't going to be simple or easy," Tavi said.
"Worthy things often aren't, sir." (P. 225)
