This is a fantastic fantasy novel that has war and politics. It is almost as if it is set in the medieval ages -transportation is through the use of carriages, and there is no electricity or modern technology, ect. The countries and races of people are completely conjured by the authors wonderful creativity. The planet itself is described similarly to earth, if not the exact same.

The story starts off drawing in the reader with vividry and gore -many deaths are described and while the actual deaths are not too gruesome, the anatomical dissections of some bodies can be a bit bloody for anyone who is overly squeamish-, but it ultimately tugs at the emotions with a little bit of romance and a lot of mutually supported heroism -heroism of an entire group of people who use their magic to protect the freedom of others.

I liked how this book showed the social strata that occurs in society while keeping me entertained with mystery and magical displays.
An allover good read.
