A dark lord will rise. Such is the prophecy that dogs Ringil Eskiath-Gil, for short-a washed-up mercenary and onetime war hero whose cynicism is surpassed only by the speed of his sword. Gil is estranged from his aristocratic family, but when his mother enlists his help in freeing a cousin sold into slavery, Gil sets out to track her down. But it soon becomes apparent that more is at stake than the fate of one young woman. Grim sorceries are awakening in the land. Some speak in whispers of the return of the Aldrain, a race of widely feared, cruel yet beautiful demons. Now Gil and two old comrades are all that stand in the way of a prophecy whose fulfillment will drown an entire world in blood. But with heroes like these, the cure is likely to be worse than the disease.   From the Hardcover edition.

Decent but ultimately, there was not enough to keep me in this world. There's much better out there, so just read some Patrick Rothfuss, or some of the YA fantasy

An ok read: Morgan's sci-fi (Altered Carbon series) is top-notch, but his foray into fantasy simply couldn't hook me. Felt more like a piece of Joe Abercrombie (First Law) fan-fic than a well-developed original story on its own.

Worth reading if you simply want more Richard K. Morgan, but if you're looking for good fantasy, there are better options out there.

Boring. Unless of course you are interested in gay erotica but, I suspect you would still find it boring. You would be better of with a recent trilogy by Brian McClellan: The Powder Mage Trilogy.

I always enjoyed Morgan's sci-fi writing, and his approach to the fantasy genre is equally entertaining. I especially like how the author does not spell too much out in terms of the world's history, civilizations, races, etc. but draws the reader in with snippets to let you discover on your own. On the downside, the graphic sex scenes were a little over the top, so be forewarned if that sort of thing isn't to your taste.

Great novel, I loved it! This is an excellent dark fantasy novel, well written and exciting, and I would highly recommend this to anyone who loves dark fantasy, or great anti-heroes!
