Not an evil dad, just a horribly misguided man who learns from his mistakes the hard way. If he were evil, he wouldn't be a tragic figure. He generates evil through his vanity and terrible lack of judgment and pays a heavy price.

This is the best production of King Lear that I have ever seen: more subtle and nuanced in its acting and directing. In Trevor Nunn's staging, Lear's daughters are a chip off the old block, as they are just as hot tempered and extreme in their passions as their father, though they go much further than he would ever dare. McKellen is incredibly powerful as Lear, and kudos to the actor who plays the fool. I never saw such powerful interchanges between Lear and the fool, who represents the voice of conscience and decency (Lear's alter ego?). The rest of the cast is equally strong, and the camera work takes this stage production way beyond a mere video transcription.
