On the day of James Kirk's birth, his father dies on his ship in a last stand against a mysterious alien vessel. He was searching for Ambassador Spock, who is a child on Vulcan, disdained by his neighbors for his half-human nature. Twenty years later, Kirk has grown into a young troublemaker. He is inspired by Capt. Christopher Pike to fulfill his potential in Starfleet, even though he annoys his instructors. Suddenly, there is an emergency on Vulcan when the Romulan Nero comes from the future to take revenge on the Federation. The newly commissioned USS Enterprise is crewed with promising cadets like Uhura, Sulu, Chekov and even Kirk himself thanks to Leonard McCoy's medical trickery. Together, this crew will travel to the final frontier where the old legend is altered forever.

What a great comment Twiggzette wrote for Star Trek (2009). I completely agree with this review (and all the others that gave valid reasons for why it's not just a bad movie, but also a bad Star Trek movie). The plot is bare-bones and there is no theme. This movie merely uses the names of the original characters of Star Trek and the star ship called the Enterprise, and therefore it is Star Trek. Wrong! It's not Star Trek at all. It makes a mockery of Star Trek. (So does Star Trek V, unfortunately, but that is another story...). Kirk becomes captain of the Enterprise almost as soon as he becomes part of the crew. Idiotic! Bad guy from the future destroys the planet Vulcan and the Enterprise does NOT try to go back in time to prevent its destruction? And Spock and Uhura have some kind of crush on each other?!? This is not Star Trek. If you have never seen this Star Trek movie, I congratulate you on your decision to avoid this travesty. If you want a nostalgic look back on Star Trek, or you want to see Star Trek at its best, just watch episodes of the original series, or the other Star Trek TV series, or some the original movies (e.g. Start Trek II: The Wrath of Khan or Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country).

I gave this disgusting horror 1/2 star. I'd give it negative 5 stars if I could. No plot. Horrible music with zero inspiration. Horrible acting. Horrible writing. But the worst part was that the idiots who produced, wrote, and directed this monstrosity relied totally upon cheap, confusing computerized special effects and the actors were hung out to dry in "useless land". A movie is only a movie if the actors are given decent scripts, and in this case, the special effects department was given full reign with a totally indecent script.

The actor that plays Kahn in this movie does a great job; but I can't help feeling that racism played a part in casting a caucasian with a mild English accent to play a character previously played by a dark complexioned Latino actor with a mild Latin accent.
Was it because they thought that people would find it too unbelievable that scientists in a Latin American country in the early 21st century could genetically engineer a super human being?
I am sure there are many Latin American actors even Guatemalan actors that could have done just as good a job in the roll of Kahn.

I love this movie! I saw it 10 times in the theater and loved every moment. This reboot breathed new life into the fandom (even if some of it was people hating the movie from the moment it was announced because the actors weren't the TOS crew), and it really nailed the important points. Yes, it is flashy and full of action, more like Star Wars than the "submarine warfare" that Trek had previously been described as, but it also cut to the heart of Star Trek - the friendship between Kirk and Spock, for one; Spock's loving relationship with his mother and his conflicted feelings about never being enough as a human/Vulcan hybrid for either planet; the grumpiness and steadfastness of Dr. McCoy, and it shines with the heart and humor that have always served as a trademark for Star Trek.

Time travel and alternate universes are nothing new to sci-fi or to Trek, but this is both done very well - Leonard Nimoy's cameo as the aged Ambassador Spock is an excellent bonus. There are a ton of winks to TOS, from Scotty's pet Tribble to the dramatic lighting in some scenes that throw back to the 60s lighting style. "Star Trek Into Darkness" brings us a wholly different Khan and a wallop of emotional moments.

I really wish they would get to work on Star Trek 4, but I don't know if they'll ever get it done - with this nuTrek crew, at least.

2009. This is the first REBOOT of S.T. with a new cast. Khan is NOT in this. The story of the beginning of James T. Kirk. Good action. A good ST movie. It SORT OF follows the ST type canon history and timeline. JJ did a good job rebooting the franchise and adding new story-plot line, equipment features.

Well done, still fun, maybe just not as great as the first one with Pine.

Nope. I ain't no "Trekker" - But regardless, I still feel that I have the right to say that this film completely disgraced and degraded the Star Trek TV Show, the characters in that show, and the actors who played those characters. It really did.
I honestly can't imagine how anyone who happens to be a true fan of the Star Trek TV Show could possibly tolerate this truly pathetic offering and readily accept these talentless actors for the obvious damage that they did to these beloved Star Trek characters. It's almost like Sci-Fi desecration, in my opinion.

I did not enjoy watching this movie very much because of all the violence. if I could edit this movie, I would take out a lot of parts.

Leonard 'Bones' McCoy: Permission to speak freely, sir?

Spock: I welcome it.

Leonard 'Bones' McCoy: Do you? OK, then. Are you out of your Vulcan mind? Are you making a logical choice, sending Kirk away? Probably. But, the right one? You know, back home we have a saying: "If you're gonna ride in the Kentucky Derby, you don't leave your prize stallion in the stable."

Spock: A curious metaphor, doctor, as a stallion must first be broken before it can reach its potential.

Leonard 'Bones' McCoy: My God, man, you could at least ACT like it was a hard decision.

Spock: I intend to assist in the effort to reestablish communication with Starfleet. However, if crew morale is better served by my roaming the halls weeping, I will gladly defer to your medical expertise. Excuse me.

Leonard 'Bones' McCoy: [as Spock leaves] Green-blooded hobgoblin.
