The real crime in this movie is John Travolta's facial hair. Rather needless and witless remake of the 70s subway hesit movie, which was more subtle and more clever. Travolta plays the hijacker and gives a terrible performance, much like he did in "Swordfish." Denzel Washington plays "Denzel Washington," the subway guy who negotiates with him. Tony Scott directs in his usual maximalist style. It is dumbly entertaining, if nothing else. James Gandolfinio plays the major, John Turturro a hostage negotiator. Consider making this a double feature with "Unstoppable."

Foul mouth movie, but I enjoyed the performance of most of the actors.

Decent thriller!

Denzel Washington and John Travolta both very good as is the late James Gandolfini (Tony Soprano) as the mayor of NYC. Script could have used some rewite to fill in some holes, such as whether Garber really did take that bribe and why a highly credible civil servant would risk it, how he was caught - that sort of thing. Terrorist Travolta's intent to game Wall Street is not sufficiently clear. And that kind of flas-stop-flash filming adds nothing but eye stress. Why no great soundtrack?

A subway train is hijacked by four men, one of them named Ryder. Ryder is asking for ten million dollars in the span of an hour, and if he does not get it, he will begin to kill the hostages. A dispatcher named Garber is the only person Ryder is willing to communicate with. Garber has been recently demoted from his position as he is being investigated. The mayor allows for the ten million dollars to be given to Ryder and the other hijackers. Why does Ryder only want to speak with Garber, and will the hostages survive? You may think this is a very action-packed movie due to it being a hijack movie, but don’t expect all guns and fighting. It focuses on building the tension between the negotiators, and the fate of the hostages.

The smart ruthless and bitter Ryder had everything thought through but there were a seasoned dispatcher and one NYPD cop in his way. And don't miss another train ride thriller, also starring Washington: Unstoppable (2010)

I have not seen the older version of the film but standalone, as a thriller, this is a watchable film. Washington delivered a good performance and the plot in general was easy to follow. OK for a Friday evening watch.

I'm a big fan of Denzel washington so that's why I gave this movie 3 stars. I still don't understand why producers insist on remaking movies that were sucessful in the first place. The original was much better.

This movie was entertaining and interesting but not one of my favorite for this year. “Not too bad---good performance”. "I fast forwarded a lot but not all the way.”

This version is MUCH better than the 1974 movie of the same title. Only the technology is different.

Ryder: Well, I got faith in you man... but I gotta ask you one question. You know that thing when you told your wife about the 35K, how did she react?

Walter Garber: Look, we gotta talk about...

Ryder: No, don't be sensitive.

Walter Garber: I'm not being sensitive.

Ryder: Well, did she freak out or what?

Walter Garber: She... wasn't happy, but she understood.

Ryder: Well, that's love right?

Walter Garber: No, that's marriage... that's another thing.
