Border Patrol Agent Danika Morales has sworn to protect the southern borders of the U.S., but that oath has cost her dearly. She has paid a heavier price than most: her husband, Toby, was murdered two years ago trying to help the very immigrants Danika was responsible for sending back to Mexico - and his murder has never been solved.

Now a string of attacks and arrests leads her to believe that someone from McAllen profits from sneaking undocumented immigrants into the country, and it's very likely that this illegal activity is tied to her husband Toby's death. Even worse, someone within the Border Patrol might be involved. Danika wonders who she can trust as she tries to solve her husband's murder and prevent more innocent lives from being destroyed.

Although this is book 2 in the Call of Duty series, each book in the series can be read without knowledge of the others.
Sworn to Protect is primarily an exploration of some of the issues around illegal immigration. I didn't gain profound new insights, but I did find concrete illustrations of the arguments on several sides of the debate.
What I liked: The characters ask the right questions about those who are after them: Who is it? Is it one person or a conspiracy? What is their motivation? How did they find me? There's a romance, but the characters have to work through their own weaknesses before proceeding. I wasn't distracted by any glaring errors in plot or writing.
What I didn't like: There's a fair amount of Spanish in the book. As a beginner-level Spanish speaker, I was distracted by my attempts to translate. Although there was some description of the discomforts of life along the Rio Grande, I didn't feel transported into the environment (as I would, for example, in the writing of Jeannette Windle).
