The author, a journalist and spiritual seeker has always struggled with the most basic questions of the Christian faith. The question he tackles in this book concerns the practical value of belief in God. His search for the answer to this question took him to some amazing settings around the world: Mumbai, India when the firing started during the terrorist attacks; at the motel where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated; on the Virginia Tech campus soon after the massacre; an AA convention; and even to a conference for women in prostitution.

When I look around and see all the suffering and injustice, whether inflicted by humans, nature or disease, I can't help but wonder what the purpose of life can be, whether suffering can be redeemed. We live less than a millisecond compared to the unending vastness of eternity. Can it be possible that how we live our lives matters when we are only one out of countless billions who came before us, exist alongside us, and will come after us? I found the answer to this question in the answer to another query: what good is God? I have discovered that God is good for many reasons: He created me, He designed me for a purpose which, if fulfilled, leads to eternal fruit, and He desires that I spend eternity in His presence. He also promises that suffering can be redeemed, that the events and circumstances which cause us grief can lead us down paths of growth and victory that we would never have imagined. And, God Himself entered this world and suffered and died alongside us in order to redeem us. But He also raised Himself from the grave, which is the ultimate proof that He understands our pain, and can fulfill His promise to make all things work together for good for those who love and obey Him.

One of the best written attempts to answer the question "if God exists, why do bad things happen to good people?" Not patronizing or exceedingly theological, written in plain language with no apologizes for not having all the answers.

"The world operates by set rules. Politicians speak of justice, of individuals' rights and operatecriminals getting what they deserve. Banks that way: they will loan you money to buy a motorcycle or even a house, but if you fall behind in payments they will repossess it. Empires operate that way. . .offend the ruling power, and you pay a price. Into that world Jesus spoke a radically different message. We get not what we deserve but the very opposite. We deserve punishment and get forgiveness; we deserve God's wrath and get God's love. In a world divided by race, culture, class, language, and religion, Jesus set loose the most powerful force in the universe, the force of grace. That counterforce brings a new message of hope to a world marked by violence and division." Philip Yancey
