Okay... Good book about 2 boys a girl and a fox and their adventure through a mixed up fairy tale land. When Jacob's brother Will falls through the mirror into the mirror world and gets a dangerous sickness Jacob and Fox (a vixen) must try to save Will before he is turned to stone forever. And just to make it worse the king of the stone humans is trying to get Will for his valuable stone. 12+

Also published as *The Petrified Flesh*. This is the first novel in Funke’s teen fantasy series, “Mirrorworld.” The series is quite creative, with layers of depth and inventive twists on classic fairy tales.

Jacob Reckless is a master thief and treasure hunter in a fantasy world, basically a Medieval Europe with all of the creatures of fairy tales -- Giants, witches, princesses, dwarves, etc. There is also a war going on between humans and the “Goyl,” aggressive humanoid creatures with skin like stone. Eventually we discover that Jacob is from our world. After his father disappeared, Jacob discovered his father’s notes which talked about a magic mirror that led to another world. Jacob has been in the Mirrorworld for years looking for his father. Jacob has a companion, Fox, a much younger girl who can shape-shift into a vixen.

In *Reckless,* Jacob’s younger brother Will and Will’s girlfriend Clara come through the mirror. Will is attacked by a Goyl and his skin slowly begins to turn to the stone skin of the Goyl. Jacob must risk his life to save his brother and protect Clara and Fox, all while in the middle of the war. It’s very exciting, with unexpected plot twists at every turn. For me part of the fascination is that few of the characters are all good or bad. Your enemy is acting from reasonable self-interest, just as are your friends. Very exciting and you will want to immediately jump to book 2: *Fearless*.

Family ties are strong, as brother chases brother through the mirror world and through danger to save each other. Somewhat scary, always fast paced, this heart thumping novel keeps you loving ever minute of it.

I'm interested to see how this will play out with all the different familial relations. Looking forward to the next book.

Didn't know what I was getting into when I read this book, but the story's setting and atmosphere went beyond my expectations. I had compared this to Funke's Inkheart trilogy but the comparison is unjustified. Reckless deserves its own merits.

This trip through the mirror is an entertaining read. The relationships and wonderfully developed characters will keep you reading. The fairy tale elements from fairies and magic mirrors will fascinate you. A highly recommended read for anyone looking for a more grown up fairy tale.
