A Gould documentary would have to entertain however well or ill done. The sources are interviews and film footage and media coverage from the time; respectable but not a documentary to set standards for them all. The examination of technique was rewarding. In spite of posthumous honors there’s a little uncertainty of how great or how crazy he was. It might be valid to say that Gould’s was not the truest way to interpret Bach, but enjoyable and important. Wanda Landowska arguing to Pablo Casals: “You play Bach your way and I’ll play it his way.” You can’t go wrong honoring intention, but may departure be correct? Tricky.

VERY GOOD bio pic about very talented pianist - had heard of Glenn, but didn't previously know anything about him. Lots of interesting film of him playing and commentary by people who had been involved in his work efforts, etc.

About the life of the eccentric and intellectual, its great; as for about the music, its kinda bad. What was interesting to learn was extent of his hypochondria and the meticulous records he kept for years about his blood pressure, a small pharmacy of pills, his weight, temperatures, etc. ... makes one think of the fools who pretend to be clever by using a watch to take a plethora of measures so that they can "live a data-driven healthy lifestyle" (a fine way to euphemize neuroticism, hypochondria and munchausen).

Enjoyed getting to learn about this great unique pianist since I had never heard of him.

"Why do people all over the world find themselves drawn to Gould?! It's not just 'cause he was a great player. It's because his life itself is a performance that people can't take their eyes away from him." Place a hold and check out this very well done documentary on the life and music of Glenn Gould. Or stream it from Kanopy today. https://snoisle.kanopy.com/video/genius-within-inner-life-glenn-gould-0

Totally brilliant ! One of the best documentaries ever done IMHO of this genius gone way too soon. If you are a Gould fan, this DVD is a must. Very well done with great pacing and lots of Glenn playing.

An excellent doc. The material is thorough and the interviews enlightening, but the considerable footage of Gould brings it to life. See also "Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould" for a slightly different take.

Let me add another 5 Star Rating to the Glenn Gould documentary. I had no idea he was such a fascinating performer. To think that he stopped giving live performances at age 32. He was then free to make remarkable recordings. I will now research the KCLS data base for the most famous of these recordings. I am so glad I didn't miss such an outstanding documentary!

I was very touched by this well-produced documentary about the life of the famous pianist born in 1932. Highly recommended. Unfortunately this doc doesn't include a clip of him playing. So, don't make the same mistake that I did in 2014: waiting 18 months before I watched a video of him performing. The first one I saw was his 1957 Bach D minor Concerto with the Ottawa Symphony. I felt like someone had thrown a bucket of ice water on me - such a revelation, unforgettable!

It is a fascinating glimpse of the life and times of one who made such a mark in the world of classical music.
