L.A. screenwriter, performance artist, and author, takes to the streets to meet the folks advertising their cheap wares in the local "PennySaver" classifieds shopper. Miranda July's work manages to make me feel depressed and creepy at the same time.
this is a good thing.

in this book she does a good job of delving into the little sadness-es and realities and joys of the regular - if slightly strange - people who place ads in the penny saver.

it's a lonely book, but it's lonely in that communal way, where you realize that sometimes we're all lonely, in the same way.

This book is such a lovely story of people as they are in every day life with no pretention or over exaggeration. Miranda July's encounters with people she meets through the Penny Saver will lift your spirit and make you want to interact with the world a little bit more.

A charming book that surprises the reader with its insight. July meets and interviews strangers who tell her more about the human condition than she had thought to ask. The final tale of meeting Joe, an old man who July casts in her film, is heart-rending. Beautiful little book .

The author, a filmaker stuck on a screenplay, browses "Penny Savers" and meets and interviews some of the people who placed advertisements in them. Quirky!
