The Battle Royale Act --- serious brilliance. [Skip the sequel, BR II, should have been titled, Sucks Royale - - movie studios always have to capitalize on the success of an original and come up with pathetically useless sequels!]
I'd label this pure early Robert Sheckley - - not in any way to demean the writer, but to complement them fully! [Reminds one of that short story Sheckley wrote, which a later Italian movie was based up, the Ninth Victim.]
And does life imitate art - - or art imitate life? Here in the Puget Sound region [Western Washington state, USA], at least hundreds, perhaps more than a thousand, people have been murdered, raped, assaulted, robbed, et cetera, all directly related to the former governors, the first Chinese-American governor, Gary Locke, and the female/sorority girl governor, Christine Gregoire. Most of the perpetually oblivious voters would consider my statement crazy, as they willfully ignore the signing of the Interstate Compact by these two, bringing in 3 out of 4 ex-convicts to the Puget Sound region, many of whom would once again murder, rape, rob, assault, et cetera!
The local corrupt politicians refuse to give us a full accounting, possible fearing legal/financial culpability. [The state paid out to the families of four slain police officers in Lacey, WA, but I don't know if that was the case with the murdered lady teacher in Redmond, WA, nor any of the other victims?]
Many similar cases no doubt occur throughout the country, at various times, and let's not forget Erik Prince [of Blackwater fame, now head of Frontier Services Group, working as an agent for China, it's primary investor] and his // Are You Ready High School \\ :
// After the shootings at Columbine High School in 1999, Blackwater created “Are You Ready High” to train its troops to “face down the violent youth of America,” Scahill said. Following the bombing of the U.S.S. Cole in 2000, the company received $45 million from the government to train its mercenaries—and then hit the jackpot after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.\\
This is rated for only people above the age of 15 - - so anyone under that age please do not view this, as violence never occurs in schools below that age. [A bit of sarcasm at this point.]

In 2000, director Kinji Fukasaku unleashed BATTLE ROYALE, his violently poetic epic about an innocent group of Junior High students forced by the government to hunt and kill their classmates for sport. It was nominated for 10 Japanese Academy Awards, launched a global phenomenon, and banned from screens by frightened civic groups and distributors across America. Three years later, the equally disturbing sequel -- featuring a new class, new rules, and a brutal terrorist plot by the first film's young survivors -- triggered its own tragic firestorm around the world. Now for the first time ever, you can see it all: Experience the entire BATTLE ROYALE saga on 4 discs -- including more than 3 hours of definitive Special Features -- that forever blasts open one of the most potent, shocking and savagely influential sagas in motion picture history.

Beware of which disc you're getting. For some reason the library decided to get three copies of each DVD and have them separate dispersed at two different locations! Take care before you check it out.

Gotta say the movie is a spot on the manga and the movie but this did gave slight nightmares of some of my friends coming into my room and slitting my throat with a hoe.(Used in the movie by Mitsuko) Good bloody good came out the year I was born

The people who gave the world the rape of Nanking and Shanghai, the Bataan Death March and Kamakazi attacks on US shipping bring you this movie about some future, or now Japanese government who behaves the way Japanese behaved a lot half-century ago and never apologized. It's not particularly difficult to believe simply considering the culture of origin.

It's going be hard to not compare this to the Hunger Games, since the concept is very similar. The main difference between these films in this one, the kids are all from the same class, and have known each other for years. This heightens the "who can you trust" factor, and how friends can very easily turn on each other when it comes to survival. Not bad film.

Ahhh... the ORIGINAL hunger games. Except this one is amazing in concept. It's underlying political message is disturbing and frightening real. You have to watch it keeping that in mind. This is not a typical "hey lets watch a scary movie" film. It actually has a moral. And that moral is too frighteningly real.

A tedious horror film.

I hoped and expected more from this. The reason for the whole BR law seemed slight and mostly illogical/nonsensical. I was vastly confused by the beginning and end. The movie never manages to build any real suspense, most of the carnage is poorly shot so it's often unclear who has done what to whom, and without emotional hooks to make me care. Little bits of back story are occasionally dropped in, but they amount to nothing, not really adding to characters (there aren't really any, they're mostly types) and said back story attempts to flesh them out seem random, unconnected, too little, too late.
Not dreadful, but not really good either, most slasher movies manufacture scares and emotion better than this.
