Casimiro Espadas returns to Mexico after fighting in the war against the Texas rebels and enters the world of politics in the capital city. However, when Mexico does not recognize the independence of Texas or the annexation of Texas into the territory of the United States, Casimiro is dragged into war again. In complicity with Santa Anna and other military officers, the United States army decides to take over New Mexico, the Californias and Chihuahua. They begin a bloody advance toward Mexico City. Loyalties are corrupted, cities are consumed by fatuous rebellions, allies betray each other, friends kill each other, and the only hint of dignity and bravery is shown by men, women and children who are far from positions of power and who become anonymous heroes. A novel plagued with death, hate and betrayal.
