My kids aged 5, 9, and 15 have all watched this dvd, and all really enjoyed it, it gripped them and scared them - and no nightmares or having to sleep with the light on afterwards either. My 15 year has watched it twice now and she says it scared the poop out of her the first time. They all want to watch Volume 2 now. So if you children understand that it is just a movie, a story, and not real life they should be just fine with this.
