In this futuristic thriller, outer-space beings search for their own paradise on this earth by using their ability to alter reality. The story appears fascinating, but visual effects seem second-rated if not poor, especially in the last fighting scenes.

Yeah. OK. From a strictly visual perspective - 1998's "Dark City" certainly did have its notable moments where I can't deny that I was quite impressed with what was being flashed before my eyeballs.

But - On the other hand - When it seriously came down to "Dark City's" oppressively bleak and ultra-grim story-line - I found it to be almost intolerable to have to endure it for its entire, 100-minute running time.

And, finally - Even though this SyFy/Horror story is now only 22 years old, it still had an oddly dated feel to it like it somehow belonged way back in the era of the 1970s.

this is one of those rare films that get better every time you see it again. it's hard to get everything in 1 watch because it is VERY detailed and condensed into a short period of time

Really weak. Film looks really dated and feels completely artificial. Long winded and story lacks continuity. Very similar to the much better film The Matrix (first movie, the rest of that series is poor compared to the original).

VERY GOOD 1998 sci-fi film.
The plot was a bit abstract (not sure exactly what was going on) - but it was fine filmography, etc. and quite a fun watch...

This is an amazingly underrated movie, which I'm okay with due to the selfish joy I get from getting to show this film to people who haven't seen it. Visually, its stunning and unique with a cyberpunk flare. Jennifer Connolly is a vision and look out for Richard O'Brien of Rocky Horror fame. Alex Proyas is criminally underused behind the camera, giving us The Crow and I, Robot. (Yes, I'm vehemently ignoring Gods of Egypt.)

A vastly underrated thriller. A man wakes up in a bathtub with fractured memories involving a murder. His quest for answers sets off a manhunt by police, who suspect him of murder. Worst, he finds he is being pursued by strange pale men in trench coats whom no one else seems to notice. The movie asks whether your personality is built from the summation of your memories, your surroundings, or something greater.

Somebody suggested this movie and I'm so glad. How did I know about it until now? What a cool film! Philosophical, artistic, weird, dark, intriguing, captivating. I learned so much from the bonus features too! Reminds me of other strange, dark fantasy/sci-fi, alter-world type movies like Brazil, The Matrix & The Double. Kinda complicated but well worth the watch.

I loved the Matrix, but Dark City, lost amidst the Matrix clones that spawned after the Wachowski's great success, blows the Matrix out of the water. Dark and mysterious, deliberately dream like and nightmarish, and far more creative than anything the Wachowski's dreamed until they adapted Cloud Atlas. Dark City is Noir at its most bizarre and boundary pushing. Dark City is Science Fiction at it's most incisive and unnerving. Dark City is Thriller and Action at its most unapologetic. This is worth digging up. This is worth your time.

Very, very creative and original sci-fi film that I enjoyed tremendously. As one commenter pointed out, Kiefer Sutherland (whom the commenter apparently REALLY despises) tended to lay his Peter Lorre schtick on a bit too thick, but as a whole, I found the movie very absorbing, floating bald goons and all.

[first lines]
Dr. Schreber: [voiceover] First there was darkness. Then came the strangers. They were a race as old as time itself. They had mastered the ultimate technology. The ability to alter physical reality by will alone. They called this ability "Tuning". But they were dying. Their civilization was in decline, and so they abandoned their world seeking a cure for their own mortality. Their endless journey brought them to a small, blue world in the farthest corner of the galaxy. Our world. Here they thought they had finally found what they had been searching for.
