This was a disappointing book. He covers two related topics: how the science (and medical practice) of saving people's lives in critical situations is improving; and what some patients report as near/after death experiences.

The first has a number of technical errors. The coverage by Atul Gawande is (IMHO) better.

For the second, he goes on and on regarding various philosophical connections, and his "AWARE" project - but in the end it's inconclusive. It's mostly a tale of "this _could_ be really exciting".
