Add a CommentMythic and heartwarming, this Superman story made me love the character so much more.
I wasn't expecting this book to be very good, it turned out to be a entertaining superman story.
I would recommend this book to anyone.
An imaginative addition to the Superman story.
Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely have turned out one of the best Superman comics in years, both beautiful to look at and enjoyable to read! Too bad the local library only sees fit to stock the first of the two volumes, someone should look into that.
A beautifully illustrated and written exploration of the Superman character, so near to perfection that it almost pains me to deduct a half-star for the tedious "Bizarro World" issue. I also highly recommend the animated film version which is very faithful to the series (minus Bizarros, thankfully).
This is possibly the only Superman comic you'll ever need to read. Miller goes to great lengths to not only create a scientifically plausible Superman, but one that feels more human, and less like a perfect, invincible being. Superman derives his power from the sun, and it is this which can bring him down, so with his death looming over him, he gains a vulnerability of character that he has never had before. In the time he has left, he seeks to do those things he can, this namely involves Lois and preparing for the future. Even in such a state he continues to be strong, but there is one loss that shakes him deeply. However, villains don't rest, and Superman must face a variety of challenges. Many of these require brains rather than brawn to solve, which is a side we rarely get to see of him...that of the scientist's son. Colours and backgrounds both give a solemn atmosphere that nicely complements this contemplative story. Each frame, and each image is deliberately laid out in ways that portray his superior aspects; some imply actions, while at others we see how he "clumsily" averts tragedy "by chance". Certain panels also have a time lapse that is masterfully portrayed. Superman's greatest moments actually come when he, as Clark Kent, must save someone without arousing suspicion in them. By hiding his actions under the guise of an oaf, we see how clever he is from the contrasting results. Truly brilliant in every way. This is the Superman story, for even those that don't like Superman.
I never liked Superman, It thought he was a boring one dimensional character. Well All-star Superman changed that. One of the best stories I have read.
Gods achieve their power by encouraging us to believe in them. Superman achieves his power by encouraging us to believe in ourselves. All Stars for All Star Superman, 5/5
All Star Superman is profound and playfull. At the time of this book's writing, Morrison was experiencing his father's decay and passing away. It's like in any sport where an athlete approaches the goal and makes it 'look easy'. Morrison is like the Gretzky of comics and what he has done in All Star Superman could only be understated by Clark Kent himself which is why I gave this an All Star rating. 5/5
I am not really a fan of "Supes" but several of the stories made me rethink that opinion. One story I saw no merit in was " Superman / Olsen War!" though Olsen girlfriend was candy to the eyes. "The Gospel according to Lex Luthor" was compelling. You hung on to every image and the storyline. Kudos! The most enchanting was Lois Lane's moment as a "super." I am not sure why she resembles more a teenager and Superman an 'older' man but I suppose it fits with the fantasy. In the final analysis, this is a worthy read.
