*A Wall Street Journal Bestseller*

Tired of the pace and noise of life near London and longing for a better place to raise their young children, Mary J. MacLeod (known to all as Julia) and her husband encountered their dream while vacationing on a remote island in the Scottish Hebrides. Enthralled by its windswept beauty, they soon were the proud owners of a near-derelict croft house--a farmer's stone cottage--on "a small acre" of land. Mary assumed duties as the island's district nurse. Call the Nurse is her account of the first enchanted years she and her family spent there, coming to know its folk as both patients and friends.

Gaelic fortitude meets a nurse's compassion in these wonderful true stories from rural Scotland. The remarkable debut of an author now in her eighties, Call the Nurse is a treasure of sweet nostalgia.

Sometimes gorgeous, sometimes hilarious, sometimes deeply sad vignettes from life in the Scottish Hebrides. It will make you want to visit, if not move there yourself.

An amazing setting with some amazing stories.

As a personal account of time spent decades ago on a small Scottish island, this book is a truly pleasant diversion. It's true--not a screenplay--so don't expect high drama, but you will find wisdom.

This is a charming memoir of life in the 1970s in the Hebrides. If you like the Doc Martin dvd series this is a book for you. Community life amongst good people.
"Gie me a wee knock if the snow's down" a quote from Big Craig, the roadman, who would get up to help with transport if the nurse got a call in bad weather.

This is a lovely book about life on a remote Scottish Island. Each chapter is a different story of humour, sadness, love ,problems and abuse. Only one nurse and one doctor for the whole Island and several other small islands. I really enjoyed it.

The author wrote about an interesting job in an interesting location, but the book left me unsatisfied. It was mainly sweet nostalgia that made me feel it may not have been an accurate reflection of the author's life on the island. I think she needed to speak to when and why she lef.

Don't expect this to be like _Call the Midwife_; it is much more about countryside and gossip than nursing. Not a bad memoir, but not especially engaging.

Interesting stories but the author is (I am sure) a better nurse than a writer. Still a record of a time that is disappearing fast.

A British nurse who moved to a remote Scottish Isle and worked as a community health nurses tells stories of her time there. The stories are funny, and she obviously loved both the people and the land. And for those of you worried about gross nursing stories - these are light on bodily fluids and heavy on humour, so please don't not read it because of that. :)
