In 1852, when prestigious Alabama plantation owner Cornelius Allen gives his daughter Clarissa's hand in marriage, she takes with her a gift: Sarah--her slave and her half-sister. Raised by an educated mother, Clarissa is not the proper Southern belle she appears to be, with ambitions of loving whom she chooses. Sarah equally hides behind the façade of being a docile house slave as she plots to escape. Both women bring these tumultuous secrets and desires with them to their new home, igniting events that spiral into a tale beyond what you ever imagined possible. Told through the alternating viewpoints of Sarah and Theodora Allen, Cornelius' wife, Marlen Suyapa Bodden's The Wedding Gift is an intimate portrait of slavery and the 19th Century South that will leave readers breathless.

What a wonderful book. I couldn't put it down!

This debut novel is a page turner that I read in a day and a half. Set in 1850s Alabama, two women lead intertwined lives. Theodora is the wife of a large plantation owner while Sarah, a slave, is her daughter's maid and husband's daughter by another slave. Told in alternating viewpoints, this novel explores the lives of two antebellum women trapped in very different cages. I was not prepared for the twist at the end. The Wedding Gift is the July 2016 selection for the Willa Cather Book Club.

This book was excellent from beginning to end.

Wow! What an utterly excellent piece of literature. The author succeeds in transporting the reader back to the time of slavery in the Southern U.S. The lives of the people are so realistically portrayed - one comes to know and love them (or at least most of them).

Very absorbing. This historical novel is Marlen Suyupa Bodden first but I doubt it will be her last. Great storytelling!

Did you like The Help or the Secret Life of Bess? You might enjoy this one just as much, and if you're in a book club, your dilemma over what book to read next might even be solved!
