"As nervy as it is hilarious, a masterpiece from Ernst Lubitsch, To Be Or Not To Be; is a Hollywood film of the boldest black humor, which went into production soon after the U.S. entered World War II. Lubitsch manages to brilliantly balance political satire, romance, slapstick, and urgent wartime suspense in a comic high-wire act that has never been equaled."--Container.
During the Nazi occupation of Poland, an acting troupe becomes embroiled in a Polish soldier's efforts to track down a German spy.

This is a 1942 American comedy directed by Ernst Lubitsch, about a troupe of actors in Nazi-occupied Warsaw who use their abilities at disguise in order to fool the occupying troops.
Although Lubitsch manages to brilliantly balance political satire, romance, slapstick, and wartime suspense in a hilarious high-wire act, the storyline appears to be mangled and ill-contrived.
The performances of the major actors, however, are superb---quite funny.
after all, it is one of the classical screwball masterpieces.

Entertaining satire with an intricate plot with many surprise end to end. They don't make movies like this anymore: Warning: no nudity, no profanity, no gory scenes, no drunkard/drug use ... but minor cleavage and LOL moments.

Actor interrogated by German soldier –
Soldier: - What do you want from the Führer?
Actor:
What does he want from us?
What does he want from Poland?
Why all this? Why?
(recited lines from Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice)
"Aren't we human? Have we not eyes?
Have we not hands...
"organs, senses, dimensions,
affections, passions?
"fed with the same food,
hurt with the same weapons...
"subject to the same diseases,
healed by the same means...
"cooled and warmed
by the same winter and summer.
"If you prick us, do we not bleed?
"if you tickle us, do we not laugh?
"if you poison us, do we not die?
"if you wrong us, shall we not revenge?"

Colonel Ehrhardt: That makes me think of a very funny storywhich is going all over Warsaw. A story about our Führer. Now, how does it go? ... They named a brandy after Napoleon, they made a herring out of Bismarck, and the Fuhrer is going to end up as a piece of cheese! Yes. They named a brandy after Napoleon. Don't you think it's funny?

Josef Tura: No. Neither would the Führer. I don't believe Adolf Hitler will go down in history as a delicatessen.
