This is a genial, coming-out novel where, oddly enough, the sexuality of its protagonist provides the least of his problems. The author is of Armenian/Israeli descent and a strong sense of this background forms the basis for this novel. Tradition matters and Alek wants to keep his while striving to fit in amongst his new friends. That being said, his rebellion is rather mild and, as stated, his homosexuality doesn’t present a real problem to anybody but himself. The central themes of this book are family and culture: the myriad types that exist and the baggage that they pass down to their unwilling progeny. The language is solid, the characters lively and the action is entirely believable throughout the chapters. It’s a refreshing change to see a YA protagonist that doesn't have to deal with bullying about being gay and shows that we really are living in a world that is changing, hopefully for the better.
