Chalk this up to my being fed up with criminal behavior, particularly violent ones, in the news, so: Regardless of the accuracy of author Garbarino's insights into reasons that contribute to the making of a criminal, our primary focus needs to be on keeping them apart from the rest of us. Where I do have patience for reading through his insights is where he addresses the value of his knowledge and experience in terms of prevention. (Thinkers among us will not consider above comments as an indictment of compassion..)
