A great adaption to a wonderful series. The show holds true enough to the books, if not directly then through subtle references to keep the book readers appeased. Changes are made, of course, but the heart of the story is maintained. The show has a rather 'cw' feel to it. Attractive older actors playing younger characters with lots and lots of manufactured angst and exaggerated characters. It does offer a more, self-aware approach than other similar shows, often breaking the 4th wall or making light of their many cliches. If you're new to the story, the main character, Quentin Coldwater, is an extremely bright graduate student who is discontent with his life. He spent most of his adolescence coasting through his life, whilst vicariously living in the world of Fillory ("Narnia"). In his younger years he shared this obsession with his best friend Julia. Over the years she 'grew up' and moved on while he didn't. During his interview rounds for grad school he stumbles upon a school of magic ("Hogwarts"), finally finding a place he felt he belonged. Julia too finds the school of magic, but she fails the entrance exam. The bulk of season 1 is split between Quentin's formal training at the magic school Brakebills and Julia's own, much darker, path to finding magic.
