Having enjoyed the books, I really like this show. Season 1 of the show has a strong "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" vibe to it, which in no way is a bad thing. It had a mix of fantasy, drama, action and a bit of horror, and starts off in a dark and brooding tone which becomes bright and cheery by season 2. To contrast it to the books the show is based on, the writers and actors do a great job making the characters more likable. Quentin and Julia are difficult to like in the book, but the show does a lot to make them relate-able. I really liked the twists on the character backgrounds and identities in the show when contrasted with the books. One joke that stands out is when Jane accidentally calls Margo 'Janet'. If you haven't read the books, the line is just banter. If you have, you'll get a laugh out of it, and realize the show takes place in a timeline 'after' the books.
