I hate to use the "this is like if this met that" when publishers are trying to sell a book, but I do have to say that this felt like a cross of any adventure novel, a great YA love story and Good Will Hunting. And I mean that in the best way possible. We start off with Monty, his sister Felicity, and his best friend Percy heading off for Monty's year of European touring, even though he's been kicked out of school. Monty is a good time boy who loves a drink or ten, and finding the closest bedroom with whichever girl or boy catches his eye. While he is definitely selfish, he certainly seems like fun, and when their plans go south during an interrupted tryst in Versaille, it seems like we're off to a fine adventure, and a sweet romance, but that's where Lee throws us a curve ball. Suddenly this novel is less about adventure and love and more about what's going on under Monty's playboy exterior. Yes, he learns some lessons along the way about privilege both of race and sex, and yes, the pace never lets up as the trio try to stay ahead of the bad guys, but more and more it becomes about what Monty is hiding from and what he will have to face to finally be happy. Our trio are each fleshed out nicely, or as nicely as can be possible when Monty is the narrator. The plot is fun and inventive. The writing is clever, and kept me engaged. I loved how Lee slowly revealed more about Monty in a natural way instead of what could have been an information dump at the beginning. I can't wait for the next one in the series!
