There's a reason this one's a classic, and that Charles Dickens is one of the world's greatest authors. Oliver Twist has adventure, brilliant characters such as Fagin (one of the most indelible characters in any novel), Bumble, Bill Sykes, Nancy, the Artful Dodger and Oliver, through whom Dickens visits a familiar theme - his nation's inhumanity to the less well off. A word of caution: Fagin, the Dodger and company are bottom dwellers, and not in the cute, Disneyish way of the musical/movie of the late 1960's. This is a serious look at a serious topic - the horrors of child abuse commonly found, according to Dickens, in 1840's British workhouses and elsewhere.
