As the author and her roommate Ian--posing as her husband--begin their Iranian odyssey in Tehran, they are welcomed into the home of an Iranian couple they were put in touch with by a friend of a friend. This openness and hospitality is routinely extended to them as they wind their way down to the Persian Gulf and back to Tehran. Wearing has a special knack for being accepted into hearts and homes of the local people (frequently against Ian's wishes), resulting in some amazing experiences. Her reluctance to finally shed the hijab she has worn throughout the trip (despite the blistering heat), attests to how strongly she has connected with this culture.
