This is the initial book in yet another series by the prolific Alexander McCall Smith. As one reviewer has said, this book is like Seinfeld--it isn't about anything. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it a great deal and look forward to reading the next in the series. The book is about a selection of characters who all live at 44 Scotland Street--Pat, in her second gap year and trying to figure out what she wants to do with herself; Bruce, a handsome egoist, who truly believes he's God's gift to women; Bertie, a youngster whose pushy mother, Irene, has him learning Italian, playing the tenor saxophone, and doing all manner of adult activities at the ripe old age of 5, and Dominica, a wise but unconventional anthropologist Interestingly, McLeod Smith wrote each chapter of this book as an installment in a magazine.
