The Guardian by Nicholas Sparks is a really great book. It takes place in Swansboro, North Carolina. As much as I enjoyed the last half of the book I didn't really like the first half. Simply because of how long and slow I found it to be. The beginning to me seemed like it really dragged on especially with character development. I absolutely loved the relationship that Julie has with Singer her Great Dane and how he was almost symbolic of Jim (Julie's deceased husband). The book starts off with Julie finally being able to start looking for a new relationship 4 years after Jim's death. She starts dating Richard Franklin but after a few dates, realizes there's nothing there and ends it. All the while Mike Harris who was Jim's best friend and best man at his wedding has had feelings for Julie for a very long time and they start seeing each other. Richard not being able to handle the rejection doesn't take this very well and becomes very creepy and stalker like. Through out the novel we see what made Richard become this way and what happened in his childhood and past. The ending is very heart pounding and powerful and keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time. This book is kind of different from other Nicholas Sparks novels because there was some chilling and suspenseful moments in this book that his other novels don't have.
