There was nothing wrong with this book. There just wasn't anything right with this book. It was uninspired. I only kept reading it because I kept thinking, until the last fifty pages (and even before I was just lying to myself) that there would be a majestic twist. And I read the last fifty pages because I was already there. In the end this book was a didactic novel about revenge, and then it wasn't even subtle. Characters were giving us the authors message hear and there. The plot was, if not completely predictable, expectable. The only thing that through me for a loop was Shivers activities towards the end - and I completely didn't beliee them ot be in his character (or at least, Abercrombie didn't make us believe them).

The only thing that stands out as positive about this book is the description. There is a cornucopia, an orgy of description. And as helpful as that can be for fleshing out a novel, it cannot be the heart.
