Perhaps my first incursion into the life of English nobility in the early 1900s, Downton Abbey certainly converted me. A great peek into the lives of both the nobility and their servants. Who knew how difficult and prestigious it was to be an upper ranking servant! The show also offers a unique look into the relationships between the upstairs and downstairs classes. Downton Abbey has created what is quite possibly the perfect formula of television for my tastes. I cared about the characters in a way that I rarely do for other shows. I felt their pain and took joy in their victories. The stakes in Downton Abbey are very real. But the show isn't all doom and gloom! Romance is abound. Top that off with the quips of Lady Violet (Maggie Smith is in top form) and Carson's stern yet teddybear-esque demeanor and we have a wonderfully well-rounded show.
