A very generous three stars. This is the first book in a series, about investigative reporter Jane Ryland. While I enjoyed the main characters and the interaction between Jane and her boss, Alex, and Jane and Jake, the sexy police detective, the plot was all over the place. The author seemed hell-bent on speeding up the pace of the novel, by introducing far too many plot lines: The Bridge Killer, who may or may not exist; Jane's informant on a major story winds up dead; a political candidate's wife suspects him of having an affair, and asks Jane to investigate; a mysterious woman in a red coat who appears too often at political rallies; people from the past reappear, and no one is who they seem to be. It's like a game of "Whack-a-Mole", where just when you think you've solved one mystery, another one pops up! I will try another Jane Ryland book, simply because I did like the character, and hope that Ms. Ryan has learned to tighten up her plot structure.
